The practice of Suizen or “blowing Zen” is to play the shakuhachi mindfully or meditatively. Meditation traditions usually start their practitioners with object meditation. With this type of meditation, the practitioner focuses on an “object” such as the breath. To practice, when the mind eventually wanders off in thought it’s noticed and gently brought back to the object(s). For a Suizen session, the objects are most often the breath and the sound we’re making.
Naturally, meditation can become very nuanced with all kinds of thoughts and feelings arising. For example, people who’re dealing with trauma may need to tread carefully or seek out the help of specifically qualified individuals. Additionally, there are of course many other approaches and systems of meditation other than object meditation.
